GREEN DATA CENTRE: BUSINESS & DECISION EOLAS AND ITS PARTNERS UNVEIL RECENT PROJECT DEVELOPMENTS - News

20/07/2010

‘7X MORE ENERGY EFFICIENCY THAN AN ORDINARY DATA CENTRE’
ACCORDING TO H3C ENERGIES

Paris, 20th July 2010,

On the 2nd July, Business & Decision Eolas, subsidiary of the Business & Decision Group, International Consultant and Systems Integrator (CSI), organised an official visit to the construction site of its new generation, green data centre. The Eolas Group, specialist in IT hosting and Cloud Computing services, has joint responsibility for this unique project. Eolas has instrumental partnerships with various organisations and businesses in the Rhone-Alps region of France, as well as international experts in data centre eco-efficiency.

The business model for this "green" data centre was founded on various different elements:

  • - The renovation of an existing building,
  • - Optimisation of environmental conditions to guarantee maximal cooling of IT equipment,
  • - Eco-efficiency measures regarding use of electrical and IT equipment and cooling methods,
  • - Use of best practices and tools for controlling the data centre,
  • - Widespread use of fibre optics.

Furthermore, this strategic decision has enabled Business & Decision to create close partnerships with some of the world's innovators in data centre technology, such as universities, industrial research laboratories, innovation clusters, etc.

The new data centre innovates not simply in terms of eco-efficiency, but also in terms of its capacity, provision of high quality service, plans for resumption of activities, virtualisation, Cloud Computing, etc.

The research and development work for the project has mobilised some key influential organisations as follows:

  • - Grenoble Habitat for assistance in identifying a suitable property,
  • - Charignon Architectures for the renovation works,
  • - The Caisse des Depots for its significant investments,
  • - APC/Schneider Electric for its optimised natural hydraulic cooling system, all electrical installations (notably all new electric management systems and air-conditioning for the racks (I-Line® Busway and InfraStruXure solutions),
  • - Intel, for its processors and server architectures adapted to virtualisation, security and very high debit internet cards. Yves Aillerie, Director of Innovation at Intel comments, "A new generation of data centres must be created to reflect the rapidly developing digital economy. Our objective is to contribute to this project, alongside Business & Decision and its innovative partners. This project enables us to exercise our commitment to equip this new generation of data centres in France. The result will be one of the most eco-efficient data centres in existence, aimed at responding to Cloud Computing requirements."
  • - Widespread use of fibre optic networks coupled with Brocade solutions.

ZPC/Scheider Electric, Intel and Business & Decision Eolas are collaborating to find new solutions for measurement, control, and optimisation of power consumption. These measures take into account the management of server life cycles and recycling of computer equipment to cover the varying levels of demand of the Data Centre.

Work on the project, which commenced in March 2010, is being carried out step-by-step:

  • - Renovation and layout of the building,
  • - The "light" work, implementation of furnishings, etc.
  • - Installation of electrics by Schneider Electric, and GDF Suez's installation of one of the biggest photovoltaic solar panels in Grenoble on the roof and on the South-facing side of the building. The data centre will be operational at the beginning of 2011.

Business & Decision Eolas' clients are already benefitting from the activities related to this project. Business & Decision has implemented a number of eco-efficient best practices across its network of existing data centres, and has become the first French hosting services provider to actively participate in the European Code of Conduct for Eco-Efficient Data Centres.

H3C Energies has put together a complete report on the theoretical advantages of a new generation green power centre. This report details the different components of this project.  It also compares the green data centre to a conventional data centre and details energy efficiency gains in each domain. The report is available upon request, at the following address:
